City's second waterfront: Riverwalk improved, but hurdles remain

  #

47736714It was lunchtime downtown and Justin Grant felt like sunning himself. But instead of heading to a tanning spa, the 23-year-old sales manager left his office building and strolled to the newest stretch of Chicago's riverwalk, where he stripped off his blue shirt and stretched out on a concrete bench.

"This is a great place to come," Grant said. "You can watch the boats go by."  more...

A Duluth icon turns 50

When large shipping vessels first arrived from the Atlantic Ocean via the St. Lawrence Seaway in 1959, people wanted to get out into the harbor to check them out.

Ted Gozanski, who supplied ships from his small boat, saw the demand to catch a ride and, with partners Hyman Kraner and Jimmy Oreck, began offering public tours on a boat called the Streamliner later that summer.  more...

What Do We Owe the Chicago River? Disinfection

  #

Chicago River - Jackson Boulevard via Flickr

I was struck by the beautiful and poetic ode to the Chicago River that Deborah Shore posted on Huffington Post this week. The history of the waterway is truly amazing and central to the growth of the great city of Chicago. And as a debt of gratitude, her essay asks, “What do we owe the river?”

Chicago, City Without Limits

  #

In the history of American urban planning, Daniel Burnham’s 1909 Plan of Chicago stands alone not only in its innate elegance but also in its astonishing ambition. With near hubris it counseled that the people of Chicago “must ever recognize the fact that their city is without bounds or limits,” and that they themselves are “a population capable of indefinite expansion.”  more...

Water could bubble up Detroit's recovery

  #

More than a hundred years ago, Henry Ford transformed the automobile from a custom-made, luxury item to a low-cost, standardized product that became the engine of the world economy. What would happen if the design skills that created the Mustang convertible were charged with creating cost-effective "plug and play" onsite water "appliances" to be used by cities and businesses?   more...

A swimmer dives in to lake Michigan chicago

The Windy City is one of America's sports meccas: home to the Bears and the Bulls, the Sox and the Cubs, and, Chicagoans are only recently willing to admit, the Blackhawks. But can it become Surf City, U.S.A.?

This week, Chicago Park District's governing board empowered the city superintendent to lift a decades-old ban on the use of flotation devices like boogie boards on the city's waterways.  more...

A scene from a "Pure Michigan" ad.CHICAGO --Tim Allen must be stopped. At best, however, I fear we can only hope to contain him.

As you may or may not realize, comic actor Allen -- former star of "Home Improvement" and "The Santa Clause" -- is the hypnotic voice behind all those Michigan tourism commercials receiving extensive airtime again on Chicago television and radio.  more...

South Haven to swimmers: Respect Lake Michigan

  #

SOUTH HAVEN -- You can't be too safe swimming in Lake Michigan.

That's the message South Haven officials are sending to residents and visitors of this popular resort town.

"The take-home message is to get people to respect Lake Michigan,'' said Mayor Pro Tem Scott Smith, who is urging area schools to include an educational video about rip currents in their yearly curriculum.

That effort -- and other safety initiatives -- comes on the heels of several drownings in recent years in Lake Michigan, some attributed to unsafe swimming practices. South Haven last year did not report any drownings, although the South Haven Area Emergency Services Authority responded to 19 emergencies along the shoreline, said Capt. Tony Marsala Sr. more...

Watching over the lake for 135 years

ST. JOSEPH - The Coast Guard station is tucked away at the end of a quiet drive lined with private residences. Except for a discreet street sign, many landlubbers wouldn't even know it's there.

By water, however, the Coast Guard's compound of well-kept white buildings jut out along the St. Joseph River just before it enters Lake Michigan is a boater's landmark, watchdog, and sometime lifesaver.

Last Saturday, in honor of National Safe Boating Week, the Coast Guard station hosted its second annual open house.

Nineteen active duty enlisted officers, 34 auxiliary members and nine reservists keep busy.  more...
