700 wind turbines proposed for Lakes Erie, St. Clair

  #
Seven hundred offshore wind turbines are being proposed for Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair including 165 turbines north of Lakeshore and wind farms off Amherstburg, Colchester, Kingsville and Leamington.

SouthPoint Wind of Leamington had already proposed 15 turbines in three spots off the shores of Kingsville and Leamington. If SouthPoint gets approval for that project, it is proposing a 1,400 megawatt project with 13 wind farms: three in Lake St. Clair and the rest south of Essex County and Chatham-Kent in Lake Erie. Each wind farm could have 55 turbines and could be one to 2.5 kilometres from shore.  more...

Ashland to ask for $6 million for USGS research facility

  #
There's a joint city, county and federal effort in Ashland, WI to build a $6 million research facility to study fish populations in Lake Superior.

An older, smaller facility exists but Superior Days delegates are asking the state for help to move out.

Now, Kupcsyk says it’s time for a new home. more...

For Boats Stored in the Water Over Winter, Nor'easter has Sinking Effect

  #
ALEXANDRIA, Va., Feb. 11, 2010 – The Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) reports that yesterday’s Nor’easter is having a sinking effect on boats stored on Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay waters. The boat owners group has received reports from several marinas advising of the sinking of vessels that had been tied up for the winter in their slip.  The blizzard’s heavy, moisture-laden snow forces a boat deeper in the water, which can place a cracked plastic thru-hull fitting — normally a just few inches above the water line — below water. Thru-hull fittings are typically connected with a hose to bilge pumps, sinks, showers, or live bait wells.  more...
