Re-created 19th-century schooner teaches science

  #
Students from Michigan, Connecticut and Illinois did cutting edge science aboard a re-creation of a 19th-century three-masted Great Lakes schooner. The students spent a week earlier this month aboard the Sailing Vessel Denis Sullivan for an adventure.

The excursion is one of 70 "hands-on career and adventure explorations" for students in grades six through 11 offered through Michigan Technological University's Summer Youth Programs.

Other offerings include a backpacking trip to Isle Royale to study moose and wolf populations, a blacksmithing course and a course on three-dimensional computer modeling, university spokeswoman Jennifer Donovan said in a statement.  more...

Project for sailing vessels to maneuver in ports using electric energy from wind

  #
The car is not the only vehicle that can be propelled electrically. Lecturers at the Higher Nautical and Naval Engineering Technical School, Mikel Lejarza, Jose Ignacio Uriarte, Miguel Ángel Gómez Solaetxe and Juan Luis Larrabe are part of a research team working on an innovative project: to have a sailing boat that can undertake port manoeuvres (such as mooring and unmooring) using electric energy obtained from the movement of the wind in their sails when sailing and thus reduce the use of fuel and the emission of waste and noise. Having the research skills in this field, they are working against the clock, given that their goal is to have the prototype operational in two years.   more...

Boat Sharing

  #
boat sharingWhen you add up the cost of buying a boat, insurance, and marina fees, not to mention the unavoidable maintenance costs, the thought of owning a yacht (or even a small boat) may be enough to scare you right out of the water. This is particularly true in today's tough and uncertain economy, when the last thing many of us want to do is add another set of monthly bills to our financial burdens. There may be options, however, that will help you spend time on the water without spending all your hard-earned cash in the process, and you might find one is the perfect solution for you.  more...

Urban river tells its own story

  #
Morning: The paddle started in the backwaters of Lansing's power dam, with three smoke stacks looming, our destination for the first of two portages as we pass through. This city is evidence it's an urban river, a forgotten "lost highway" of commerce that once helped farmers get grain to market.

St. Clair Shores looks to boost Nautical Mile's status

  #
By car or by boat, St. Clair Shores' signature Nautical Mile is targeted to be Lake St. Clair's destination location.  City officials are working to make it easier to attract restaurants, offices and shops to fill a handful of vacant spots on the Jefferson strip between 9 Mile and 10 Mile. Meanwhile, the city's Tax Increment Finance Authority (TIFA) and property owners on the lake side are working on longer-term ideas to create a lively waterfront that would lure boaters, such as improved marinas, an entertainment area, retail shops, public space and enhancements to Blossom Heath Park.

Upper stretches of Grand River today show few signs of ancient glacial water that once ran 100 feet deep

  #
LIBERTY — It is hard to imagine the narrow stream behind the General Store here in the headwaters of the Grand River was once part of the “deepest and most important rivers in North America.” That would have been 14,000 years ago, in the time of melting glaciers, according to Douglas author Kit Lane, who wrote “The Grand,” a book that traces the river’s history.   more...
