Oil spill near Kalamazoo River causes stench, mess

BATTLE CREEK -- A phalanx of government officials and private clean-up experts raced Tuesday to protect water supplies in western Michigan after nearly 20,000 barrels of crude oil from a failed underground pipeline escaped into the Kalamazoo River. By late Monday, the downstream edge of the spill had reached Ft. Custer State Recreation Area, between Battle Creek and Kalamazoo. Grand River's latest threat: Asian carp

Nineteen Indiana beaches on Lake Michigan are suffering from high bacteria levels, according to the Beach Guard pollution monitoring system.

Beaches impacted currently are in Lake, LaPorte and Porter counties. Many beaches become contaminated after heavy storms wash contaminants on streets and other surfaces, in sanitary sewers, and from septic systems.  more...

Next weapon against carp: Annoying noise

Scientists' newest hope to steer Asian carp away from the Great Lakes is aiming powerful sound guns at them.  Members of Congress were told Wednesday during a hearing that an underwater sound gun blasted at the fish at high decibel levels might keep them out of places they're not wanted. The guns have been tested on trout from 130 feet away at a noise level of 210 decibels, which injured the fish.  more...
