First Great Lakes high-speed ferry begins service


The first high-speed ferry on the Great Lakes crashed through the swells of Lake Michigan on its maiden voyage Tuesday, crossing to Michigan in about 2 1/2 hours and then cruising back to Milwaukee.

Hundreds of people cheered and waved from the pier in Muskegon, Mich., as the ferry pulled in at midmorning after the trip of some 80 miles, and more were there to greet the vessel as it docked at Muskegon Lake.

As passengers disembarked, Patsy Petty, vice chairwoman of Yes Muskegon, a group promoting lakefront development, greeted them with hugs and a band played near the newly built terminal.   more...
