Michigan scuttles money for boat cops


Boaters and personal watercraft operators can still be ticketed for breaking the laws of the lakes this summer.

But their chances of getting caught will be significantly lower than last year, particularly on weekdays.

That's because the Muskegon County Sheriff's Department's "marine safety operations grant" has been slashed by the state. Fewer dollars will mean fewer patrols on area lakes.

Muskegon County commissioners, meeting Tuesday as the courts/public safety committee, voted unanimously to accept the 2004 marine safety operations grant of $75,012 from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The total is about $19,000 less than last year, said Sgt. Gary Berdinski, who commands the marine patrol program for the sheriff's department.    more...
