DNR prepares for summer beach monitoring program

Although the Lake Michigan shoreline areas presently remain covered with snow and ice, the state Department of Natural Resources is planning for beach monitoring to take place this summer.

This will be the second year there has been a statewide beach monitoring and notification plan in place. DNR toxicologist Toni Glymph, who led state and local officials in developing the plan last year, said the state agency in taking comments into consideration about the 2003 monitoring season to implement changes for 2004.

Some of the changes being planned include using different signage, changing the Web site where beach monitoring data are posted and having a hotline in place, Glymph said.   more...
