Beach walkers lose ground to homeowners


Priscilla McCracken vows she won’t let a court ruling stop her from walking along the edges of the Great Lakes, the scenic treasures she’s enjoyed her whole life.

In fact, the 86-year-old Dearborn Heights resident has planned trips to enjoy shorelines of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron this summer, despite newly clarified limits on where she can walk.

“The beach should be open to anybody,” said McCracken, who added she would never complain about someone walking on her shoreline — if she owned a lakefront home.

These days, the public’s right to walk on the beach and a landowner’s right to claim trespassing is not a line in the sand. It’s the edge of the water, no matter where the water might wander.    more...
