Spring, summer shipments up about 30% at Port of Milwaukee, officials say


Shipments are up at Wisconsin's Lake Michigan ports and the St. Lawrence Seaway that links the Great Lakes with the East Coast and trans-Atlantic destinations.

The Port of Milwaukee has seen about a 30% increase in tonnage this spring and early summer compared with the same period a year earlier, said Kenneth Szallai, port director.

The port's cargo includes commodities such as cement, asphalt, coal, salt, construction materials and agricultural products. About 25% of the shipments pass through the St. Lawrence Seaway, with most of the shipping traffic from September through December.   more...
