Woman drowns after driving car into Lake St. Clair


CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) A woman driving for the first time since suffering a stroke drowned Sunday after her specially equipped car plunged into Lake St. Clair, police in this Macomb County community said.

Ariana J. Curtis, 36, of Chesterfield Township, was dead by the time two firefighters broke through the car's rear window as it lay submerged in 8 feet of water, Detective James Gates said in a statement.

Curtis's husband Jeffrey, 48, told police she became partially disabled about three years ago but was taking driving classes through her physical therapist. After receiving a favorable evaluation, she had her car adapted with a left-foot gas pedal, the statement said.   more...
