What lies beneath

Diver Kimberly Monk was "just blown away" when she first swam down to the wreck of a ship called the Sligo, lying 22 metres deep in Lake Ontario, off Toronto's western waterfront.

The icy water around the 48-metre vessel, which sank in a 1918 storm, was astonishingly clear, reports Monk, director of the Toronto-based Great Lakes Institute for Marine Research.

"I expected that we would have had trouble not only seeing the wreck but actually photographing her. We were expecting to need strong lights for our cameras, but conditions are so good you can almost see her from the surface."  more...
