Flying the Flag


In honor of Independence Day in the US, we're republishing this article on flag etiquette that first ran on SailNet during the Spring of 2001 but is as timely as ever.

Every now and then a sober-minded mariner must take a break from the weighty study of seamanship and admit that boats and sailing usually are lots of fun. Flags are fun too, and that's why so many sailors fly so many colorful flags in so many patterns.

Yet the student in me cannot refrain from interrupting this gaiety to point out that nautical flags, besides being a delight to the eye, also serve as a means of serious communication.  more...
