Michigan: The land of snow machines


GRAYLING -- Michigan grooms more than 6,000 miles of snowmobile trails. That might seem like a lot, but not when compared to 18,000 miles in Wisconsin, 22,000 in Minnesota and 30,000 in Ontario.

Yet snowmobiling is bigger business in Michigan than in any of those places because we have more snowmobiles. About 250,000 people buy $25 snowmobile permits to use our trails each year, roughly 200,000 from Michigan and the rest from Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and a dozen other states.

They come here because we have a) snow; b) proximity, c) all those miles of scenic trails that don't exist in most other states, and d) a trail permit that is cheap compared to Wisconsin ($75) and Ontario (about $165).   more...
