'Genuine Risk' Pays Off In Mackinac Race


Boat Crosses Finish Line In 33 Hours

CHICAGO -- Bottles of champagne were being popped open early Monday out on Lake Michigan morning after 33 hours of racing in the 96th running of the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac Island.

Genuine Risk, a 90-footer owned by Randall Pittman of San Diego, Calif., took first place, reaching the island with an unofficial time of 33 hours, a Chicago Yacht Club news release stated.

"We just had a little air and we did a pretty good job," Pittman said after finishing the world's longest annual freshwater race, according to the release.

Though many believed Genuine Risk to break the record finish time set two years ago by Roy Disney's Pyewacket in 23:30:24, weather conditions challenged the 24-person crew of the 4-year-old sailboat, the release said.   more...
