White Pine's a go, snow or no


MANCELONA -- The 29th annual White Pine Stampede, one of the country's biggest cross-country ski races, will go off as planned Saturday. But because of poor snow conditions in an unusually mild northern Michigan winter, the 50-kilometer course will be reduced to about 40K, and the 20K and 10K courses each will be cut by a kilometer.

"Wednesday, I wouldn't even have guaranteed you that we could have made it that long," said race chairman Jack McKaig. "The weather forecast is for more warm weather. We're going to have a race, but the trail will be pretty rough. I wouldn't tell anybody to bring the new skis they got for Christmas."  more...
